In a sidebar note: I think you get many questions on this feature because HP's product literature is inconclusive in this regard.

I purchased an 8620 yesterday. Haven't unboxed it yet.

For me the 2 sided scanning was a must (to scan years of uni notes before throing away my folders) .

 

I also backup what others have said, this feature is not well promoted in you literature. Luckily the display model had an hp sticker saying "2 sided printing, scanning ..." but even then i came to this forum to double check before unboxing.
