I've purchased both printers (HP8610 and HP8620), and I can confirm that automatic duplex scanning can be done from the HP8620, but not the HP8610. The HP 8610 doesn't have the option to select 2-sided option, when selecting from the printer. It has it in the software package, however, it still asks the user to manually flip the documents...which defeats the purpose. I'm not sure why HP would do this as they're pretty much the same printer except for the smaller LED touchscreen. It probably boils down to a marketing thing. As a software engineer...a firmware update should easily fix this. Yes...HP...I'm looking at you!

The 8610 cannot perform automatic duplex scan. You have to flip the document over manually which sucks.

Good greif Sunshyn, half of this feed you suggest printers have the ability, and the last with what appears to be actual knowledge, with no reference, appears to be incorrect, 8620 does. Do you really work for HP?

I took my 8610 (which WILL NOT automatically scan two sided documents) and exchanged it for the 8620. The Staples manager gave me an even exchange,  no extra charge for the more expensive model.

Based on personal experience: 8610 WILL NOT scan two sided documents automatically

8620 does scan two sided documents with the ADF and you don't have to turn the paper over manually.

HP should make this more clear on the box and to the people selling these machines.

Hi @Kmann1,

You are absolutely correct, I made a mistake. Good grief indeed;

After reading back from page one, I see my error. Although I do work on behalf of HP, I am human, please understand I am not perfect. I do apologize for the confusion I may have caused and I did edit my previous posts to say '8610 does not have the duplex option via the document feeder, thus it can not auto duplex scan or copy, the 8620 and 8630 do have the option.'

I'm calling "No harm, no foul" on this thread.

We ended up with a printer that will do the job we want it to and we're now happy after some inconvenience and annoyance.

HP is also senin us a free XL black ink cartridge as a peace making bonus.

As many other replies here have indicated, the 8610 cannot automatically scan two-sided (duplex). Only the 8620 and 8630 can do this, as indicated in this HP document.

Duplex scanning ability depends on what kind of paper-handling mechanism (including an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), and internal paper-path engineering) is fitted to a device. It costs more to design, build, and fit a duplex mechanism than a simplex (one-sided) one, so manufacturers sometimes offer a cheaper model with reduced ability. As ever, you get what you pay for.

HP might argue that the 8610 can scan two-sided.... it's "just" that the user has to:

  • wait for the first scanning-pass to complete, then
  • pick up and rotate the paper-stack, and then
  • re-insert it to allow the unit to scan the second side and complete the job.

But for most people, this is not what they expect when they read that a unit has two-sided scanning capability. As another writer here has said: manufacturers should be open and clear about this, in the statements that they make.

However, frequently, they are silent -- or are not clear -- on this subject; which is very frustrating for people who may want to buy a unit, but firstly, want to check whether it has full, automatic, duplex scanning ability, or not.

For example, here is a so-called "specifications" document that fails completely to say anything about duplex or simplex scanning ability, even under the heading "Scanning specifications".

Please, HP and other manufacturers: in your online descriptions, be clear, specify correctly, and specify completely.

I have been trying all evening to duplex scan on the 8620.  I looked at your screen shot of what I should see and that is not what I see when I choose the scan option and details.

Hi @goliath

I can help you duplex scan.  What operating system, and version do you have? Mac or Windows?

Here's what my 8620 looks like to select auto duplex scan. Just choose the two sided option on the bottom right.

If you have the 8610 model it will not automatically scan both sides; you will have to flip the paper over manually.

I took my 8610 back and traded it for an 8620 which I like very well.
