"If you are using HP Ssolution Center version 10, download a version 12 software from photosmart c6380. use the advanced installation to select a Custom settings. Check the box for Imaging device function and HP Solution Center then uncheck the rest. select USB connection type. at the lower left bottom corner you will see a box that says "if you cant connect the device....connect the device later...", check that box." by Nickyton81 on03/13
@ Nickyton81: Lots of Kudos!
@ All: Just downloaded and installed the Photsmart C6380 (6300 series) software. Afterwards I got rid of the C6380 specific driver (~400-500 MB or so) and kept the version 12 on the rest. Make sure that you stick to the instruction above "check USB connection ... connect device later"
Result: Scanning with 75dpi not al problem at all, and OCR w/ 300dpi still works. File size is a tenth, i.e 40kb versus 450kb. Problem solved, "Ende, Schluss, Punkt, Basta ..."
Question: Why can't HP do such a patch or upgrade and notify all customers who deal with this problem? At least an announcement on the product page of the series where it works (I use a 7280 all-in-one).
Thanks,
Bjoern

Hi Dexter,
I hope so that HP is now aware of it. I guess that's why this forum is supported: a) Share user experience and solutions, b) improve products (hardware, software, reliability, user friendlyness, "green technology", etc.). Would you know if these threads, discussions, newa groups are regularly "browsed" by HP employees to find out what's happening "in the market" at the end user?
Just a note: My user experience from "HP" tech support (via email) was disappointing. The CSA was not catching the point (definitely not subject matter experts from in-house). Too bad I deleted the responses. They wrote about "they" meaning HP does not have the right solution for that. My guess is, that they (the tech support) were not able to understand the fact that although you can select "pdf" or "searchable pdf (OCR)" in the menu the task processing itself always defaulted to the high resolution 300 dpi OCR setting.
I guess the Solution Center 12 will soon replace a lot of 10 versions, that might be a good PM task to drive forward. Keep fingers crossed.
Btw: I like your slogan "Nothing lasts forever, but the certainty of change"
Take care,
Bjoern

EDIT: I deleted original post since I think Nickyton81 nailed it...as reflected by the updated thread title.
I just changed to HP Solution v.12 that is available through the C6380 download and it seemed to do the trick. Here's the link (choose software and drivers, then your OS, then HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers (big download).
HP Photosmart C6380 support (US)
Make sure to follow Nickyton81's direction copied below:

HP Solutions software boot up seems to indicate older version (100...) but the HP Scan utility that is integrated into it indicated v.12. Also I had installed C7280 first, that's probably necessary. The setting for non-searchable text PDF seems to have taken, and I can now produce 50-60 Kb per page PDF in B&W 150 ppi. You might have to adjust the contrast. A greyscale 100 ppi was more like170 Kb per page. Either alternative is acceptable to the 700-1000 Kb achieved before regardless of the resolution setting used.

Hi to you all. I have read all the threads with amusement. I am glad there are others out there with the same/similar frustrations!!! Just like all companies when they get big they forget what the No1 priority is which is CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I am gobsmacked that HP don't get their act together and offer some customer satisfaction.
I have a 4470C (I think. It has 4470C on the lid but C9880A on the base product sticker??) scanner which also scans hugh .pdf files when scanning in black and white bitmap (1 page = 1,308kb) yet the same scan as a black and white .tif file is only 51kb. A 'True Colour' .pdf is 54kb. The .tif is the only decent quality scan but will not scan multiple pages!! aaaagggg!!! The colour scan is all pixilated and the bitmap scan picks up every bit of 'noise' and produces 'smudged' copies. A total waste of time and effort!
Has anyone got any suggestions of a different company product that can supply a product that works properly?

I'm not familiar with that model, but I guess I'd look at HP support site for similar models made for your market - and keep looking at the 4470C site, until you find a recently released driver package. I believe the set I found for v.12 (designed for C6380, but seems to work with my C7280 and fixes the overly large PDF size) had a file date of September 2008. Otherwise, unless someone else discovers a solution like Nickyton81 did, you're on your own.
Curious that the true color PDF was small.

I'm only going to add to the discussion without presenting any solution. Who needs to use OCR anyway? The vast majority of people scan docs so that they have 1) an electronic copy or 2) so that the docs can be shared in their original form. I cannot comprehend why this feature is forced on us for the benefit of what must be an extrememly small slice of the population.
I'm scared that downloading another driver will only mean that I must later download the C7280 driver when it does not perform. I have already lost so much of my life dinking around with this silly peripheral and I just don't want to loose any more time.

The feature is not "forced" onto you. If you do a custom installation, then you can choose to not install it with the click of a button. And trust me, there are a LOT of people who want to scan letters and edit the info on it before sending it to somebody else, ot maybe even just print it. I would not consider it a minority by any chance.
