Definitely sorry that the previous steps did not resolve the issue.

With those basic steps failing, I would recommend contacting HP support if it is under warranty at 1-800-474-6836.

If it is out of warranty, my opinion is that it may be more cost effective to upgrade to a new printer rather than paying to have it repaired.

I see that the front panel has the ready to download message and it won't go away.  I can see how that can be a problem.

It sounds like it is preparing for a firmware update.

The first thing I would try would to disconnect the power cord from the printer for 1 minute and then to reconnect it.  This is known as a hard reset and it essentially reinitializes the hardware and the software in the printer.

Once that is done, I recommend running the firmware update utility for your operating system at www.hp.com/go/eprint to ensure the firmware is current.  Once at the site, select your printer from the drop down and then click on the operating system you are using.  If it is already current, then the update utility will indicate this.

Update firmware is important as it helps resolve any problems that were identified in the software loaded in the printer.  Think of the firmware in a printer as the operating system for it.

I've done a bit more experimenting and I've found that the printer is not recognised, neither as a USB device nor via a network connection.  The hard reset doesn't work either.  It will print a test page if I open back and front panels, switch on and close them, but that's all.  The touch screen shows the usual layout for about a second, then a relay clicks and it switches to the Ready 2 Download message and doesn't respond to any touch.  I did download the firmware update, but couldn't load it.

What I think has happened was that the printer was preparing for a firmware update and something happened to cause the PCB to fail.  I tried to get it going by putting a finger on the right arrow as I switched on but that didn't work.   I plan to take it to a local HP agent tomorrow, but I think it will probably cost more than a new pprinter to repair.

I'd like to thank you for a thoughtful reply and I'll go back to your post and give you kudos - you deserve it!

It is indeed out of warranty - bought Feb 2011. Think you recommendation is right, but what a condemnation of the quality of HP products.
