Hope that the post by IronBadger (I assume HP employee or an authorized representative is not a hoax. I followed the recommended path of installing HP Easy Start. The results are the same as before -- the MAC is reporting that 'Matterhon.framework' will damage my computer, and is blocking the test page from printing. Pure joy.
About ready to kiss this printer, any further HP printers good bye for ever. If not resolved shortly, will also report to Consumer Reports.

The only way I can get my HP laserJet to print is to connect the Mac to the "Direct HP Wifi" generated by the printer. Even though the printer is actually connected to my main BTHub wifi network. THIS IS THE ONLY WORK-ROUND I've found. It's ludicrous that HP/Apple can't communicate when releasing updates!!
Being based in the UK means that the 1-800 number mentioned earlier doesn't work for me.

The second option (with first uninstalling and then reinstalling) worked for me! Now I'm able to print and no pop-ups! Thank you.

Worn out by the struggles, this old man called the HP printer assist number [content removed]
Reached a fellow at the HPTechCenter in the Philippines.
He carved out all of the old software, installed a new system, and for the first time in more than two weeks, I've not only gotten the wifi link back--which had been bastardized by the last set of HP software--but print and scan functions are working like they did when I first got the printer two years ago.
Whew!
... in dah woids of dah ol' Alka Seltzer commercial: "try it, you'll like it!"

Doesn’t work for me either. Have done exactly as instructed and the malware warning still pops up. How can this be? Have spent hours on it now.
What else can be done? Very frustrating 😞

Finally talked to HP. Used the number [content removed]. The HP person was familiar with the issue. We basically uninstalled HP with the HP uninstaller. Then downloaded HP driver (depending on your printer) and it got rid of the messages. I used to use HP Scan app but prior to the call I had already downloaded HP Smart which is what I use now for scanning. With HP easy, I was able to print but had to keep installing for every print prior to this fix. He said unless you completely remove the HP software, and reinstall it, it will continue to happen. Hope that helps.

I've been at this problem for nearly 3hrs. Finally sorted.
I'm on MAC OSX (latest) Catalina 10.15.7
The uninstall/install (first try) was unsuccessful and on reboot, everything still kept popping up error messages about the framework files damaging etc.
Using the newer installed package, I then UNINSTALLED... this seemed to work far more effectively than the older version of uninstall for some reason.
Closed the computer down and restarted.
THEN Used HP Easy Smart AGAIN to INSTALL from fresh. This worked a treat and even brought the scanner back on easily.
Moral of the story? HP has cost me three working hrs - no apology off HP for anyone... and I'm sharing for others that end up here and find the same issues I've had. Current HP info posted above does NOT cover all eventualities. Hopefully this has been useful and might save others time.

I followed these steps and now my Officejet Pro 8600 Plus will no longer scan. Is there some way to contract HP for help. Is there anyone I can call?

Uninstalling and re-installing worked for me. Full instructions here:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06960563
(make sure to select 'switch to HP Drivers' if this comes up for you during the re-install process)

Good evening, I have a MacBook Pro macos big sur, version 11.0.1. and an hp Officejet 6500A plus printer. I have not been able to connect them despite following the steps indicated. Two things I want to say:
The HP company, far from helping and facilitating users to use its products, generates additional problems that leads us to lose a great deal of time to solve, aspects that should have been controlled. ***bleep*** ...
We will have to think about which printer to buy next time.

Instead of all this insane uninstalling and reinstalling on a terrible OS, just delete the framework folders. Worked perfectly in one shot. HP support did it for me over logmein. Took minutes and worked.
Good old Apple, making changes that affect many thousands of users and many printers arbitrarily, It was all working fine until Apple changed something and the whole world has to scramble.

I wouldn't delete the framework folders unless you are planning to do a full reinstall. I tried this earlier and lost a lot of functionality (for example, couldn't see toner levels in printer details, etc). Just follow the instructions in this HP article to fix the problem: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06960563
@Carlos_hugo, sounds like you might have a different problem if you can't connect. Sorry, the above fix is just for the expired certificate problem. You'll have to push through with HP support.

After trying to uninstall and reinstall, I ran uninstall again and then also deleted the contents of Library/Printers, since I'm installing the only printer I will have. This mirrors @Rayomoonshine's suggestion about deleting the frameworks.
Then I used the HP "easy" setup to reinstall (again), and shazam! Everything works.

Next installment in my saga, FYI ... this is sadly a non-starter for those of us with older printers.
I have upgraded/updated my Mac OS to Big Sur
I have downloaded a new installer for my ancient but trusty HP PSC 1350, which of course has zero warranty after so many years.
I have also d/l'd the Uninstaller but have not (!) deleted/uninstalled my old printer software yet, as others have been warning they are left without any printer software whatsoever after doing so.
And I'm glad I did, b/c the patch won't work for me either: the automatic unzip of the Installer presented me with a grayed-out icon with the "prohibited" symbol superimposed over it, with the error message:
"You can’t open the application “1300_731_DE.smi 2” because the Classic environment is no longer supported."
Upshot: my OS is too modern for my still functioning printer.
So I take it, I have to toss (i.e. "recycle") a perfectly functional printer, because HP et al. screwed up??? I am NOT amused.
HP, do not tell us you have no idea or method for fixing this self-inflicted damage... (and then hope that the next printer I buy will be from HP).

I managed to have AirPrint work, but that didn't allow me to scan. I tried HP solution deleting all the software and reinstalling the driver for my Envy D411 printer. The driver was from 2014, and I received the error msg that the driver was incompatible with the operating system MacOS 10.15.7. So, I finally did what Gimbal suggested:
This worked:
1. In System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > remove the existing instances of the HP printer.
2. Download and install the Apple-supplied HP drivers from the link posted above: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US
3. Reboot the computer.
4. In System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Add the HP printer as if new.
Thanks Gimbal! I can now print and scan again.

Glad to hear that this fix works for others. But the fact remains for folks with older printers that, yeah, it's easy to uninstall, download the printer software again, and re-install, all that ... Great, thank you, tutti bravi.
BUT!
The installer for my elderly but until recently fully functional printer ***is no longer supported***.
You can't even click on it and TRY.
It has been banished into obsolescence at the (by all reports, inadvertent) flick of a "certificate".
So again -- great, glad for ya if you can print again. But no matter how I approach it -- I will have to throw away a functioning printer and buy a new one, because these corporate behemoths can't/won't get their acts together on behalf of the people buying their products.... forcing 100Ks of customers to add yet more plastic trash to our suffering planet, because of an "oops! sorry!"-glitch in some electronic synapses somewhere.
SICK!
Be well, all....

Thanks for the instructions IronBader. I did everything BUT my printer isn't on the list of printers in HP (select your printer). Its a 2008 Deskjet and the software hasn't been upgraded by HP. What now ? Chuck out a perfectly good printer ? Buy a new not HP printer ?

Hello, My printer is not on HP list of printers. Does anyone know if HP will be adding any more updated software to their list of printers, namely for HP Deskjet F4200 ? The printer was working perfectly before. Thanks.

Followed iron badger instructions,
office jet pro 8710 now working on wifi (almost) normally.
Labelled as USB printer in printer selection box, not wifi, and I still need to download scan software.
Now to set up a laser jet P1005:
- downloaded HPPrinterDrivers5.1.dmg
- extracted it to printer drivers folder, clicked on it to open it
- HP driver installer opened
- "volume does not support this update"
- bypassed through "system preferences/printers"
- set up new printer, list of MacOS drivers showed up, selected HP laserjet
- appeared to set up normally
- print job appeared to spool and send normally
- no response at printer

I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 and I experienced many of these same problems including the irritating pop-ups. These problems came out of nowhere. My printer always worked but the scanner would not work. I tried many of the solutions suggested here and elsewhere. It may have been a combination of things that ultimately proved successful but until I tried Gimbal's solution (10-27-2020 02:57PM) nothing worked. His or her suggestion saved the day for me .... about three hours later. Many Thanks.

I followed all the directions and the scanner still won't work. The printer works, but it worked prior to the uninstall, reinstall process. When I click on the scanner icon, I get a message that says "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)"

Just bought a brand new DeskJet all-in-one printer/scanner and can NOT get it to work. Tried everything. Nada.
This issue started in October and it's December now. How is this still a thing??
I know what my solution is: NEVER EVER buy an HP product again.

Nothing worked for me at first. I tried this, then I tried lots of the further suggestions. Finally I found out how to reset my printer to its factory settings. That worked. I still re-installed the driver after doing that, although I'm not sure I needed to do that.
My printer was an OfficeJet 6700. On that printer, to bring up the menu that will let you reset the printer to its factory settings, I needed to hit the return button four times. The return button is one of the four buttons that surround the LED display screen, but never appears on screen. To clarify, the four buttons Home, left, right, and return. They all have lights behind them, and the lights turn on and off depending on whether they're available. But to bring up the right menu, I had to hit the return button four times while its light was OFF. Then I had to use the arrows to navigate to the right page. On other printer models, this will probably be different.
