My office jet 3830 recently is powering off completely as it attempts to do a paper feed. This happens when I issue the “print” command from adobe on my iPad. All software and firmware is latest version.. to correct, if I unplug printer, shut down my iPad, then restart printer, iPad and attempt to print, it sometimes works….sometimes I have to do this multiple times. Any ideas?

Hi @Cre8tive2,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the issue of your HP OfficeJet 3830 shutting off completely during the paper feed might be due to one of the following causes:
Power Supply Issue
- The printer may not be receiving a stable power supply. Ensure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet (not a power strip or surge protector). Unstable voltage can cause the printer to shut off during high-power operations like feeding paper.
Hardware Malfunction
- A faulty power module or internal hardware issue could cause this problem. The strain of feeding paper might trigger an internal fault, shutting the device down.
Paper Feed Mechanism Issue
- The paper feed rollers or sensors could be stuck, misaligned, or damaged, causing the printer to misinterpret the situation as an error and shut down.
Overheating
- Prolonged or repeated printing attempts can sometimes cause the printer to overheat, triggering a safety shutdown.
Firmware Glitch
- While you've confirmed that your firmware is up-to-date, a glitch or corruption in the firmware can still cause unexpected behavior.
Troubleshooting Steps:
Inspect the Power Source
- Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet.
- Try a different power outlet to rule out voltage issues.
Reset the Printer
- Disconnect the printer from power, wait for at least 60 seconds, and then plug it back in.
Check the Paper Path
- Inspect the paper tray and internal rollers for jams or obstructions.
- Clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
Perform a Power Cycle
- Turn off both the iPad and printer. Disconnect the printer from power and leave it unplugged for 5-10 minutes before reconnecting and restarting.
- Restart the iPad before attempting to print again.
Run a Hardware Diagnostic
- Access the printer's control panel and run a diagnostic test, if available.
Reinstall the Printer
- Remove and re-add the printer on your iPad to ensure there is no connection issue.
Test with Another Device
- Print from another device (e.g., a computer or smartphone) to determine if the issue is isolated to the iPad.
Factory Reset
- As a last resort, perform a factory reset on the printer. Be aware that this will erase all settings and preferences.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
