HP DeskJet 4133e All-in-One Printer

Why do I have to push the resume button on my HP DeskJet 4100e every time I want to print? And there is a small message envelope showing in the display panel which I can't access through HP Smart.

I have updated firmware; I have run other checks. There is no paper jam. I have the correct cartridges installed. It is connected to the internet. I have turned it off, waited and turned it back on.

I have HP Smart installed and when I access the printer it doesn't show any issues.

Anybody have any new ideas on what the problem is?

Hi @robisquire,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue with your HP DeskJet 4133e requiring the Resume button to be pressed before printing and showing the envelope icon on the display panel could be caused by one of the following:

Possible Causes and Solutions:

Firmware and Software Update Discrepancy
Even though you mentioned that the firmware is updated, verify that the HP Smart app and printer drivers are also up to date. Sometimes a mismatch between app and firmware can cause these issues.

  • Open the HP Smart app and ensure you are using the latest version.
  • Go to the HP website and download the latest drivers for your printer model.
  • Reinstall the printer to clear any potential misconfigurations.

Envelope Icon Meaning
The envelope icon could indicate a pending or failed fax or print job, or a special configuration like an Instant Ink alert.

  • Log into your HP Instant Ink account (if enrolled) to check for notifications. If there are billing or ink-related alerts, resolve them to remove the icon.
  • Alternatively, try clearing all pending jobs:
    • Access your print queue via the HP Smart app or the device control panel on your PC.
    • Delete any paused or stuck jobs.
  • If the envelope indicates a fax notification, ensure there are no failed fax transmissions in the memory.

Printer Default Settings
The Resume button might be linked to specific printer settings:

  • Check the paper type and size settings in the print dialog box and ensure they match the paper loaded in the printer.
  • Reset the printer to factory defaults and set it up again using HP Smart.

Sensor or Hardware Issue
A misaligned or dirty sensor might falsely signal an issue requiring manual intervention:

  • Open the printer and gently clean the sensors near the ink cartridges and paper tray using a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Ensure the cartridges are properly seated and the printer cover is fully closed.

Reconnect the Printer
If the printer is connected via WiFi, network instability might cause errors that require manual acknowledgment. Reconnect the printer:

  • Forget the printer on your PC or device.
  • Reset the printer's network settings.
  • Use the HP Smart app to reconnect it to your WiFi.

Additional Steps:

To reset the printer to factory settings:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cable for 1 minute.
  3. Reconnect and hold down the Resume button while turning it back on. Release when the light blinks.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
