5255 Printer gets "Cannot Conect With USB Device" when trying to clean cartridges or anything. I have unbinstalled software and the printer and reinstalled, no help. Is this thing trashed?

@largerjohnson

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

Are you able to make a copy at least?

Let's try to reset the Printer here as it helps in removing any stored static electricity from the Printer which might be causing these issues.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  7. NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  8. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  9. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  10. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Let me know if this helps.

Yes I can copy.

What startedf this is the usual lousy HP design allowing ink drying on the print cartridge if the printer is idle a week or so. All thses years and still the same thing.

So I went to do the clean preint heads thing and got the "unable to communicate with the usb device" and went through all of what you suggested. Still no USB connection.

After I uninstrall the printer and s-ware and re-install, it shows up in device manager but as soon as I try to use the  maintain your printer / clean cartridges I get the "unable to communicate with the usb device" and its gone from device manager.

Maybe its a Win10 update thing but its sure not making me want to USE anything HP anymore.

I am an industrial maintenance technician and work with inkjet and laser coders and am not new to trouble shooting.

The unplug replug from the wall socket to fix is not making me feel like yopu know what you are doing.

So I took a Q-Tip and alcohol and cleaned the cartridge gunk myself and am printing fine.

I'll not be buying another HP product in the future.
