Hi @Jeff1025, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet 5740 printer is displaying a paper jam error despite no visible paper jam and you've already cleaned the rollers with alcohol, try the following steps:
Power Cycle the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
- Wait for at least 2–3 minutes to reset the internal sensors.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
Check for Hidden Paper Bits
- Open all access doors (front, back, and ADF if applicable).
- Use a flashlight to look inside for small, torn paper pieces.
- Remove and reinsert the paper tray.
Manually Rotate the Rollers
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Locate the rollers in the rear and front.
- Manually rotate them to ensure they are freely moving.
- If you feel resistance, a tiny paper piece may be stuck inside.
Reset the Printer
If the error persists:
- Press # and 3 while turning the printer on (partial reset).
- If this doesn’t work, try # and 6 (semi-full reset).
- If the issue persists, try # and 9 (full reset, but this erases settings).
Update the Firmware
- Go to HP Support and check for a firmware update for your model.
- Install the latest firmware update, as it may fix sensor-related issues.
Check the Paper Path Sensor
- If none of the above work, the issue may be with the paper path sensor (dirty or faulty).
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
