Yesterday I changed the yellow cartridge in by 8028. Immediately after, it says "Carriage Jam". Switching the old cartridge back and it still says "Carriage Jam". Alas, the carriage is not jammed, so fixes that involve "clearing the carriage path" by removing paper or whatever can't help me. When I press OK, it goes through the check sequence, which inclided moving the carriage, and the carriage moves fine. But it still says "carriage jam" and won't do anything.
The video shows the whole problem.

For those who might find this page in the future:
The problem is a small white gear, just deeper in the mechanism than the pink cartridge. This 17-tooth gear can be bought on Amazon, search for HP printer gear and you'll find "BCH Paper Feed (PF) Gear for HP". I don't know if this is the cause or the effect of a more serious problem, I'll update this post when I give it a try.

Sure enough, replacing the broken gear fixed my printer. You do need to move fast, it took a while to clean the printhead with paper between the rails because things dried out because the cap wasn't closing. A little wrist-grease, and it's good as new.
