When my black ink ran out, I installed a brand new genuine HP 950XL cartridge into my HP 8600 Plus all in one printer and got the error "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists contact HP".  I tried turning off then on. Since it wouldn't let me access the menu to confirm my firmware was up to date, I then removed the new ink cartridge, and replaced it with the old empty 950XL cartridge. Once the old cartridge was back in I was able to access my printers menu system. My firmware is up to date. And my printer will let me print in all color ink, but that is wasteful and I should be be able to print with black ink (Note that my printer works just fine)

I have read that the newer HP ink cartridges might not be recognized by my HP printer. The only visible difference is that the old cartridge has a white circle on the front, and the new cartridge has a black circle on the front. I've seen some forum replies where HP advises that if the cartridge doesn't work to buy a new printer, but it would be absurd and wasteful to toss a perfectly good  printer into the garbage.

I am sincerely hoping that someone has a path to getting my ink cartridge to work. Thank you!!

Hi, Just an update. I spoke with a support person at HP who assured me the old (950XL) CN045A cartridges should be compatible with the new (950XL) CN045AN. He had me gently wipe the contact on the cartridge with a barely damp lint free cloth. And it worked. I can print again 🙂 Turns out a simple solution was all it needed. Restored my faith in HP.
