My printer is now indicating that all four cartridges are damaged.  I put in new ones and the problem does not go away. I have tried the suggestions on this forum site to no avail.  This is clearly a software problem which I would like to know how to fix.  This printer is too new (but out of warranty) to be having mechanical problems. I can see why others are suggesting moving to other brands if this can't be resolved quickly.

You may need a firmware upgrade.

This Post pertains to the following OfficeJet products listed in the following table that has new firmware that disables the cartridge security affecting cartridges using Non-HP security chips.  If your printer is not listed here, it is not affected.

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Officejet 8620 Printer. I understand that you are getting damaged cartridge error and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,

Reseat the ink cartridges, and make sure latch is down.

Clean the ink cartridge contacts.

Reset the printer.

Resetting the printer can resolve some ink cartridges errors.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

      note:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer.

Click here and refer the document to perform the perform the above steps.

Let me know if that works.

Cheers.

Thanks for your help.  I am back up and running.  My "HP Support Assistant" said my software was up to date, so I didn't look any further.  Even the support rep I called yesterday said it was due to my refilled cartridges and that my only options were to try genuine cartridges or buy a new printer.  This was a great outcome.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

My HP8620 was about $100 (net of say $20 of ink) when purchased new at Office Depot during a December 2014 giveaway event. Let's be really genuous and say OD's wholesale price was $60. Le's say HPs direct costs were $50. Let's say the printhead cost HP $5. But HP now sells replacement printheads for about $200. Why can't we 8620 owners with printheads damaged by HP's firmware now buy printheads at cost, say as much as $20 including shipping? My 8620 will never print magenta again. So I have a blue/yellow/black "color" printer now. None of us 8620 buyers will ever buy HP again unless we get replacement printheads at a reasonable cost (say the wholesale price that repair shops pay). Go for it, HP. Start shipping 8620 printheads for $20, including one-year of extended warranty. Stop trying to move us into "discounted" printers that cost more than our 8620. The 8620 is a great printer. HP Ink subscriptions are not a bad deal. It is the firmware, warranty, and aversion to 3rd party ink that suck big time (Cheney said it first).
