Hi @8720USfan ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer's touchscreen lights up but does not respond to touch input, this may indicate a hardware or software issue with the printer's display panel. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
1. Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Check if the touchscreen responds to touch input.
2. Perform a Hard Reset
- With the printer turned on, unplug it directly from the power source.
- Disconnect any USB or network cables connected to the printer.
- Wait for at least 2 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
- Turn on the printer and test the touchscreen.
3. Clean the Touchscreen
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water.
- Gently wipe the screen to remove any dust, smudges, or debris.
- Avoid pressing too hard while cleaning.
4. Check for Firmware Updates
If the touchscreen is partially working, try the following:
- On the printer, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
- If this option is not accessible, update the firmware via the HP Smart app on a connected computer.
5. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults
If possible, perform a factory reset:
- Navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
- Confirm and allow the printer to restart.
6. Test with the HP Smart App
- Use the HP Smart app to control printer functions and verify if it's only the touchscreen that is non-responsive.
- Download the app from the Microsoft Store or your smartphone's app store.
7. Inspect for Physical Damage
- Check for any visible damage to the screen.
- If there are cracks or signs of impact, the screen might need replacement.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I have tried all these but it wont even let me do a hard reset. If I plug it in the screen lights up but nothing is there. The printer has been working perfectly fine with no issues but suddenly stopped in the middle of a project.
