Hi @JDT10,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Deskjet 4500 g510g showing “incompatible cartridge” for the 901 / 901-XL cartridge. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm the correct cartridge model
The HP Deskjet 4500 g510g supports HP 901 or HP 901-XL cartridges only.
Make sure the cartridge number on the label clearly says 901 or 901-XL, not a similar-looking model.

Check regional compatibility
HP cartridges are region-locked. If the printer was purchased in one country and the cartridge in another, it may show as incompatible.
Compare the region listed on the cartridge box with the country where the printer was originally purchased.

Remove all protective materials
Open the cartridge access door and remove the cartridge.
Ensure all orange plastic tabs and clear protective tape are fully removed from the cartridge contacts and ink nozzles.

Reseat the cartridge properly
Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.
Make sure it is installed in the correct slot and the access door is fully closed.

Power reset the printer
Turn the printer on, then unplug the power cord from the printer while it is still on.
Wait 60 seconds, plug the power cord back in, and turn the printer on again.

Clean the cartridge and printer contacts
Remove the cartridge and gently clean the copper contacts using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinstalling the cartridge.

Check for mixed cartridge types
Do not mix starter cartridges with standard or XL cartridges in some cases.
If another cartridge is installed, ensure it is also compatible and from the same region.

Try one cartridge at a time
If both black and color cartridges are installed, remove one and power on the printer.
This helps identify if a specific cartridge is triggering the incompatibility message.

I hope this helps.
