Officejet Pro 8600 plus

I NEED HELP! i have never had problems with my officejet pro 8600+ until now. i bought new, sealed genuine HP 950/951 cartridges from a neigbor, these are 100% authentic. when i put them in i get, "ink cartridges not compatible" message. ive read on here that theres supposedly an 800 number u can call with HP and they can release whatever restriction this message is talking about. these cartridges are also still under warranty!! what do i do?

Hi @KCulberson34

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I understand the printer is not accepting the ink cartridges and giving an error. I'd be happy to assist you. Let us try these steps:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Perform step 3 from this document.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Sir, I really do appreciate the message but I have to respectfully ask if you're serious??? Of course I've tried a reset! It's a regional reset I need. I spent ALOT on these cartridges and now they're glorified paperweights.

Hi @KCulberson34

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community.

Have a great day!

thsnk u so much. im growing impatient, though, with all these other folks and their suggestions to merely reset the printer, or swab the cartridge contacts to clean them. those suggestions were the obvious first choices. i know my way around ALOT of HP printers , and i'm telling u....i need a REGIONAL RESET! the cartridges that went empty are CN049AN/black, and                      CN0(50 thru 52)A /magenta, yellow/ cyan. the "non-compatible" cartridges are C2P61A/black, and C2P(58 thru 60)A / for other 3 colors. these new cartridges are full and new, AND 100% GENUINE HP. so what do i do???

The "C2P61A/black, and C2P(58 thru 60)A / for other 3 colors" cartridges are Instant Ink cartridges, they will not work in the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.  The Officejet Pro 8610/8620 series was the first of the 8600 series that accepted Instant Ink cartridges.  If you had an Officejet Pro 8620 the cartridges still would not work unless you had an active Instant Ink subscription.

This is not a Regionalization Reset issue.

I would suggest you return the cartridges to your neighbor for a refund as they were not theirs to sell.  The Instant Ink cartridges remain the property of HP, they will not operate in a printer that is not enrolled in Instant Ink.  Based on the terms of service your neighbor was required to return the cartridges to HP once the service was canceled.  The ink is supplied, but remains the property of HP and must be returned if the program in accordance with the terms of service.  See sections 5.d and 9.c of the terms of service here.

The issue you have is not with HP, it is with the neighbor that sold you cartridges he did not own.  If you read the terms of service for Instant Ink you will see that the cartridges are the property of HP and to be used only with an active Instant Ink account.  In particular, section 5 says (bold emphasis is by me):

5.d.iii  As between You and HP, HP retains all ownership rights and interests in the Instant Ink Program Cartridges. HP provides the Instant Ink Program Cartridges to You solely to enable Your use of the Instant Ink Service. The Instant Ink Program Cartridges will work only with the corresponding printer designated in Your Service Account; You are not allowed to (i) use the Instant Ink Program Cartridges with any other printer (including but not limited to other printers that You may have enrolled under the Instant Ink Service) (ii) use the Instant Ink Program Cartridges outside the scope of the Instant Ink Service (unless HP expressly permits otherwise), or (iii) sell the Instant Ink Program Cartridges or otherwise provide them to others.

5.e Instant Ink Program Cartridges Must be Returned by You to HP. You agree to return to HP all used Instant Ink Program Cartridges by following instructions for return provided to You by HP. Without limiting the foregoing, You must return to HP the Instant Ink Program Cartridges when (i) You have used all of the ink in the cartridges or You otherwise cease using them, (ii) Your Instant Ink Service is cancelled for any reason, or (iii) HP otherwise directs You to return the cartridges to HP. You agree to not include items other than the Instant Ink Program Cartridges in any HP-provided postage prepaid return envelopes that You send back to HP. Contact HP if an Instant Ink Program Cartridge is damaged, leaking ink or otherwise appears to require special handling, and HP will provide You with special instructions regarding how to return that cartridge. You assume responsibility for any cartridges You return to HP using a method of return that does not comply with HP’s instructions. You assume responsibility for ensuring that any returned cartridges are handled in accordance with applicable environmental law, and You will indemnify HP and hold HP harmless in the event You do not comply with such applicable law.

The beef you have is with the neighbor who sold you cartridges that were not his property.  He is bound by the terms of service in the contract he has with HP.  I would suggest you return the cartridges to him for a refund, he must then return them to HP.

BTW, my primary printer here is an Officejet Pro 8600 Plus I have been using since 2013 with no issues.  It is an excellent printer.
