After digging for hours figuring out why my printer stopped printing in colour and not even a colour option was present in my HP Envy 4520, I figured it out.

A suggestion was presented online to plug in the printer with USB cable so it reverts to the original printer driver, and not the latest HP official driver which seems to cause this. However I don't have a USB cable and only use it as Network Printer. Another solution was to install Duplex printing, but that wasn't working either.

The solution is simple. On Windows 11 go to Printers & Scanners, click on your printer, go to printer properties, go to the advanced tab. Under Driver, select Microsoft IPP Class Driver, instead of the HP driver.

On Windows 10 you need to go to Printers and Scanners, click your Printer then click "Manage" and then do the same steps.

The only reason I figured this out is because my Windows 10 PC was still printing colour, so I knew it wasn't a hardware issue, but had to be the driver!!!!

Unbelievable.

Hi @TVD1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer series. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till the warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware

I would provide a word of caution, if the fix works for you great, however on many printers the IPP driver does not support a lot of the advanced printing features. Another solution to your issue is to follow the steps to get to the printer properties and then click on the device settings tab and scroll down to find an entry for device type and change it to color.
