Thanks for the reply NonSequitur777.  I ended up finding the support phone number and contacting tech support.  I had been entertaining the idea of trying out HP's all-in-one plan (printer and ink service), so I decided to go for that as the printer is 9 years old.

Thanks again,

@BCPalmer1977,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

This issue typically indicates a firmware or hardware problem caused by the power outage. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and potentially resolve it:

1. Perform a Power Reset:

  • Steps:
    1. Turn off the printer and disconnect it from the power source.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and the printer.
    3. Wait 2-3 minutes to discharge any residual power.
    4. Plug the power cord back into a wall outlet (avoid power strips/surge protectors for now) and reconnect it to the printer.
    5. Turn the printer on.
  • Why: This clears minor firmware glitches caused by the sudden power loss.

2. Check for Hardware Damage:

  • Inspect the printer and its components, as best and safely as you can, for signs of damage (e.g., burnt smell, loose cables, or physical issues).
  • If you have a surge protector, ensure it did not fail during the outage.

3. Perform a Firmware Recovery (if available):

  • If the printer powers on but freezes at the first dot, it might require a firmware recovery.
  • Steps:
    1. Go to HP's support site and download the HP Printer Firmware Recovery tool (if available for your model) :
    2. Steps to Find the Firmware Recovery Tool:

      1. Visit HP Support:

      2. Enter Your Printer Model:

        • Type HP ENVY Photo 7855 into the search bar and press Enter.
      3. Choose Your Operating System:

        • The website should detect your operating system automatically. If not, select the correct version (e.g., Windows 10/11, macOS).
      4. Check the Firmware Section:

        • Scroll down to the Firmware section. If the recovery tool is available for your printer, it will be listed here.
      5. Download and Install:

        • Download the Firmware Recovery Tool and follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
      6. Run the Recovery Tool:

        • After installation, connect your printer to the computer via USB and follow the tool's prompts to recover or reinstall the firmware.

If the Tool Is Not Listed:

      • The Firmware Recovery Tool might not be available for all printers. If you don't see it listed:
    3. Follow the tool’s instructions to reinstall or recover the firmware.

4. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults:

  • If the printer's Control Panel becomes responsive during boot-up:
    1. Access the Setup menu.
    2. Navigate to Tools or Printer Maintenance.
    3. Select Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Note: This will erase custom settings, but it may fix corrupted settings caused by the outage.

5. Inspect the Power Module:

  • A power outage can damage the printer’s power supply module or logic board.
  • Action: If the printer uses a removable external power adapter, test it with a multimeter or replace/try it with a compatible power supply to see if the problem has been resolved.

6. Check for Paper Jam or Carriage Blockage:

  • A mechanical issue can also halt the boot process.
  • Steps:
    1. Open the printer access door and inspect for paper jams or obstructions.
    2. Ensure the ink cartridge carriage can move freely.
    3. Remove any debris and try restarting the printer.

7. Contact HP Support:

  • If none of the above resolves the issue, it may be a critical hardware failure caused by the power outage.
  • Action: Try to contact HP Support for assistance. Provide them with the printer’s serial number and describe the issue. If your printer is under warranty, they may offer repair or replacement options.

Notes:

  • Using a surge protector or better yet a UPS, is highly recommended for future protection against power outages.
  • If the issue is hardware-related and outside warranty, consider getting a repair estimate to weigh the cost against replacement.

Let me know if you need further clarification!

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the reply.  I've looked online and this seems to be an issue with this printer after a power outage.  Since the printer is stuck trying to boot up, there are no options to do anything.  There is no menu.  There are no options.  There isn't a way to update firmware.  The HP logo shows with a blue line under it and 1 dot of seven filled in.  In every single instance I can find online, people are informed by HP how to reset the printer.  Thanks for the help.  HP pointed me here to get help since the printer is out of warranty.  Does HP not assist customers on how to reset their printer?

@BCPalmer1977,

Looking from the outside in, it appears to me that HP hasn't allocated the (paid) resources to assist customers like you...
