I have a HP Officejet 8740 with two trays. For some reason, Tray #1 is the only one to take alternate paper (photo / cardstock.)
Therefore, the default has to be Tray #2. So I was able to change that, and it prints fine from our iMacs. However, when we want to use Air Print, it defaults back to Tray #1 (which is always cardstock) and to print on regular copy paper from Tray #2, we have to go into the settings and change that.
I have the HP Smart App installed, and when I go into the settings there, it is the same (I am assuming that it is reading the from the Printer Webpage, so I'm expecting it to be the same. However, when we print, we still must tick about three extra steps just to get it to print on the copy paper instead of cardstock, even though the copy paper is the Default.

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you want to change the default tray.
You will have to change the default tray settings on the printer control panel.
Press Setup
Then scroll to "Tray and Paper Management".
Press "Default Tray" and select the tray which you want to print from.
This should fix the issue.

Thanks for the suggestion. However that setting is how I have the printer setup wit the second tray as the default. And it works when printing from the iMac. But Air Print / iPhones use the first tray as the default so we always have to change if we don’t want to use card stock.

Thanks for writing back to us.
I made deep research and see that there is no option to change tray 2 as default when you are printing from AirPrint.
That is how it is designed.
I hope this helps.

You can also try the below steps and check if that helps.
- On the front control panel select Setup.
- then select System Setup.
- then select Paper Setup.
- Under Paper Setup verify that the Default Paper Size is Letter
- Also under Paper Setup select Tray 1
- Under Tray 1 make sure the size is set to Letter.
AirPrint should then be able to recognize the paper size what is loaded in the printer.
Keep me posted.
Cheers.
