All that comes out of my printer is code a printed page with UNIR.
I have already uninstalled and then re-installed the printer, checked firmware updates (none), updates my macbook. I had several times that i got a message that the file was corrupted (PDF) but now no messages and also word and jpegs are not printing. Does anybody have a clue?

Hi @hesjeb,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
The issue you're experiencing with your HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw printing only "UNIR" on pages typically points to a driver, configuration, or data corruption issue. Here's how to troubleshoot and resolve it:
1. Perform a power drain
1) Take out the cartridges
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges
2. Check the Printer’s Default Language
- Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Find the printer's IP address (it’s usually displayed on the printer's control panel under "Network Settings").
- Enter the IP address in a web browser on your computer.
- Verify that the "Print Language" setting (e.g., PCL, PostScript) matches the driver you installed. For most modern setups, "Automatic" works best.
3. Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver
- Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware
4. Test with a Different File Format
- Try printing a plain text file or simple Word document instead of a PDF or JPEG to rule out file-specific corruption.
- If PDFs are problematic:
- Use a different PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Recreate or re-export the PDF from its original application.
5. Check for Printer-Specific Errors
- Print a configuration page or network settings page directly from the printer menu to confirm the printer itself works properly.
- If these pages print correctly, the issue is likely with the data sent to the printer.
6. Try an Alternate Connection
- If using Wi-Fi, switch to a USB connection or vice versa.
- If the problem persists, this could indicate a broader hardware or firmware issue.
7. Factory Reset the Printer
- Resetting the printer to factory defaults may resolve any misconfigurations:
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Service > Restore Defaults.
- Confirm the reset and reconfigure the printer.
8. Verify on Another Device
- Connect the printer to a different computer or device.
- If it works correctly there, the problem is likely with your MacBook configuration.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

Hi Irwin6, i did a lot of these things before posting it to this forum. But the final solution was to choose the SECOND HP colorlaserjet pro M252 dw as printer. I guess that updating the printer made a 'new" one in the list. But because the other one was the default printer, it was not the updated version. By changing it to the second one, all problems disappeared. Thanks anyway for your thorough explanation.
