I created an Avery label pdf to print and the printer says ... "Paper Size Mismatch.  The paper size detected by the printer is smaller than the paper size selected for the print job.  The current print job will be canceled."

BUT  ... everything is correct!  I don't understand what is wrong!  Please help ... thanks.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

I might have an explanation that describes what is happening.

I do not know whether the information will be enough to help you print your little label sheets using your Envy printer.

Read or Ignore the following as suits your curiosity and situation.

The printer "Tray and Paper" settings are likely not a match to the paper size you are using.

Hence the error.

This label sheet is a custom size paper:  4.25 X 10 inches

The printer software can create (and supports) a Custom Size Paper form in this size.

- Tray and Paper Size -

The trick is to get the printer's "Tray and Paper" setup to accept the custom size.

Is the Printer Tray and Paper size not matching the paper being used actually an "issue"?

Maybe, though considering the printer supports Custom Paper Sizes, it does seem like there would be a way to make it work.

Note to those reading

This is not an issue using an OfficeJet Pro printer that includes a Tray and Paper size of "Custom".

As shown in the example (below), depending on the printer model, Tray and Paper accepts size "Custom".

--------------------------------------------------'

I don't know whether the printer display panel (on your Envy) has a "Custom" size in the "Modify" list -- it would be the last entry of the choices available.

I suspect the Envy printer "Tray and Paper" setup does  not include "Custom" (when supported, "Custom" is last in list).

EWS – Browser - Tray and Paper

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

Model Dependent:

  • No Size > Select “Custom”  Note:  Not all printers support size “Custom”
  • Advanced section (Model Dependent) > General Tray, Default Paper, Default Tray, Tray Lock

Click Apply to save changes

- What to do? -

Not sure.

A couple of ideas...

If you still have the completed Word template for the Avery 2160 document, try printing that document.

This might also work Exporting the document to PDF, though I do understand you've already tried that method.

In Printing Preferences, select the Custom Size for which you have created the Custom Size Paper form.

  • When called from within printing software / applications, Printing Preferences might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" / “More Settings” / “Properties” / "Printer Setup" / "Presets" or similar.

In Tray and Paper, that is, on the printer, select paper size "Letter" -- it's not right, but it is at least not "too small".
