Example: Photosmart6520
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I was using a non HP black cartridge as well as non HP color cartridges.  Everything was fine.  The black cartridge needed to be replaced. I used another non HP cartridge.  The black stopped printing.  I purchased an HP cartridge and still no printing in black.  The colors print fine.  I cleaned the printhead, realigned the printer, cleaned the screens, unplugged it.  Nothing is working.  My printer is also out of warranty. Can anyone help?

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Are you using genuine HP Ink cartridge?

Is copy working fine?

Any Hardware or software changes made in the printer?

Did you try to print from a different application?

I suggest you do a Hard Reset

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.

(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Clean the printhead

If you found defects on the Print Quality Diagnostic report, run an automated tool to clean the printhead.

  1. Load plain, white paper in the tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, touch the Settings icon .

  3. Touch Tools, and then touch Clean Printhead.

The printer cleans the printhead and prints a test page.

  4. Check the test page for defects.

Align the printer

on the Print Quality Diagnostic report, align the printhead.

  1. Load plain, white paper in the tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, touch the Settings icon .

  3. Touch Tools, and then touch Align Printer.

After the alignment, a message displays on the printer control panel that tells you the alignment status.
