I'm using an HP DeskJet 2632 printer with a genuine cartridge that has ink left in it, my firmware is updated, the print cartridges are cleaned, and I've aligned and cleaned the printheads. But when I print, no black is printed at all. Not even light grey or how it looks when it is running low on ink -- no black ink at all.

 

But when I set the paper to "glossy" the black prints perfectly. So the issue isn't the cartridge, but what is it? T

@Lina8, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

 

I understand the printer is not printing in black on regular paper.

 

Try making a standalone copy in black on regular plain paper and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

 

Also, print a Print Quality Diagnostic page as shown in step 8 of this document. Check for black.

Hi Kumar0307, thanks for your help. 

 

Just to clarify, the printer prints on regular paper, but only if under print settings I set the paper type to glossy. I don't actually need to use glossy paper.

 

I did the standalone copy test and it printed a blank page. I printed several Print Quality Diagnostic pages before posting here and they all had 0 black, but color is printing fine. 

 

The firmware is TJP1FN2021BR, and HP Smart says there are no updates available.

If the issue persists, let us perform a factory reset on the printer and check if that helps.

I'm going to update this in case anyone searching has the same problem. I reset the printer and that didn't get it working again (to do this you unplug, then plug it back in and press down the color copy and resume button, which is the one that looks like a piece of page).

 

Although my old cartridge still has ink and will print if I set the print mode to "glossy" it will not print anything black ink otherwise. It's obviously defective in some way. I replaced the cartridge with a new one, and the new one works. 

 

With the price of genuine HP ink cartridges, it's obviously disappointing to have to throw away a perfectly good one, particularly because I had to waste so much color ink as well printing dozens of print quality reports and test pages.
