Hi. Printouts on my HP Envy 4527 printer are showing black marks on the reverse (back) if I print on photo paper. The marks are near the center of the page and appear in fours (please see photo).  Presets are set to photo paper. The problem doesn't occur with plain paper. IMG_0133.jpegI've tried using the HP Utility to "clean back of page smear" and "clean printheads" several times. I've also changed the black ink cartridge.  None of this has helped. Any ideas?

Hi,

As a such does not happen on plain paper I would most suspect the used media.

What exact photo paper type is it? is it a Glossy, Matte, etc.

Is it listed as Inkjet compatible on its packaging?

What is the listed bond/gsm on its packaging?

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I've tried a number of different photo papers. One matte tone by Epson. One glossy one by Xerox (which claims to be compatible with HP printers).  All of them show the same problem and all are Inkjet compatible.  The Xerox photopaper shows 180g/m-squared and the Epson photopaper shows 167g/m-squared.  Is that the listed bond/gsm?

I'm wondering if it's the thickness of the media. Plain paper doesn't show the problem because it's sufficiently thin. Thicker media does, regardless of its type.

The  printer hasn't been used much. Just a few pages per month. Might that have anything to do with it? Again, thanks for your help.

Well, Generally your printer supports 220 to 280 gsm photo paper, it is out of the listed thickness but from the other side.

Additionally, do yo set the printer with the proper paper type? That should be done on both the printer screen when inserting the paper, and both on the Printing Preferences pane on your computer

The usage might have anything to do with that, but cleaning the paper wheels should help for a such.

Hi. By "from the other side" do you mean it is not as thick as it should be?

Yes, I've set the printer to "photo paper" on both the printer and on the software settings.

How easy is it to clean the paper wheels? I've not tried that before. Will isopropyl alcohol do the trick? Are the wheels easy to get to?

Thanks for you help.

Hi,

Please use a lint-free cloth with distilled water for a such.

Steps 2 and 3 below should show you the exact locations to clean:
