My printer is stuck on a blue screen with an error message C4EBA645. No other buttons work. I have tried unplugging and plugging the printer back in as well as holding the power button while it is unplugged. I recently replaced one of the ink cartridges so it is possible this may be related to the issue but when I open up the top of the printer the ink cartridges stay parked inside the printer so I can’t take them out or replace them or anything. What else can I do?

@Mjohns14, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

This is a critical firmware error that typically prevents the printer from functioning and is often related to hardware or firmware issues, sometimes triggered by cartridge problems.

Here are the steps you can take to try and resolve this issue:

Perform a Hard Reset

You’ve already tried this, but just to confirm:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

If the blue screen persists, continue to the next step.

Check for Cartridge Issues

Since you recently replaced an ink cartridge, it could be the cause.

  • Do not force open the cartridge access area if the carriage is stuck.
  • Instead, try this:
    • Unplug the printer while it’s still on (to bypass the firmware lock).
    • Open the cartridge access door.
    • Gently move the carriage manually to the center if it’s not locked.
    • Remove and reinsert the cartridges, especially the one you recently replaced.
    • Close the door and plug the printer back in.

Use HP Smart’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

If the printer is recognized by your computer (even in error state), try using the HP Smart app:

  • Download or open the HP Smart app: HP Smart
  • Go to “Diagnose & Fix” in the app.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to detect and resolve firmware or cartridge-related issues.

Update or Reinstall Firmware (if accessible)

If the printer is detected by your PC:

  • Visit HP support page
  • Enter your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware.

If the printer is not detected, skip to the next step.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
