I have the issue with my HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 and am looking for a solution.
Initially everything worked fine, not sure why this is happening.

The bonjour name changes every day or two. For example it is currently HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 [68F&F&] (3). I changed it just a few days ago to HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 but it didn't stay with that name for long. We live in a place that has short power outages at least once a week. So maybe it is because it is loosing power?

My current solution is to remove and reinstall the printer on all my mac computers. But that is hard on my family members who don't know how to do this.

@yewenyi, Welcome to HP Support Community!

To be able to assist you better, I'd like to know the following-

  • When you say the printer name changes, does it lose connectivity?
  • Does the printer's status become offline on the computer?
  • Have you tried using the AirPrint drivers?
  • Is there any error message when you try to print after the power outage?

Keep me posted for further assistance.

I did some tests.

1. Our computers loose connectivity because the bonjour name changes. I have learned to change back using the hp smart app on my phone. AirPrint on iPhones and iPads is unaffected.

2. Yesterday I was having trouble with connecting from the phone as well. I power cycled the printer using the power switch. When the printer restarted the name had changed. The change is in the last few characters. It adds a hex code and then the following (#). The # is a number. It usually increments by one. But I have seen it up in the thousands.

3. We get no error messages. After I fix the name any print jobs on the computers come through with no additional action required.

When there is a power outage, just restart the devices ( router, printer, and computer ) and try printing.

The bonjour name does not change. You can set the Bonjour Name for the printer on the EWS. Here is how you do it-

Use the printer IP address to access the EWS, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display. Once you have the IP enter it on the browser window.

Under Wireless menu > Airprint > Set the Bonjour name.

Also, Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
