Had the same problem today 11-26-2017. Tried the reset and was the same.
Finally took out the ink, got message put in cartridges. Put in black, got Do not.... , took out black put in color, system went through setup perfectly. Put in black afterwards, works great. Hope it helps, maybe tech can see a fix.
Thank you JP1943 for posting what worked for you!
I went to try your method by taking both the cartridges out and then I put the black one back in first like you did and that's all that was needed for mine. I didn't need to put the color one in for it to go ahead and continue the setup. Although when I put the color cartridge in afterwards it still didn't recognize it and I would see the error message still under my alert section. I tried to align cartridges too and couldn't, it would still say not to use setup cartridges. Then I went to the Update Printer option on the screen and did an update and it fixed the problem entirely! No more error message
Thank you!

have the same issue. Bought a brand new HP envy 7855, went to place the cartridges, and says do not use SETUP cartridges". Tried the reset 4-5 times. I don't really have to be on the phone for several hours fixing this. how do I get new cartridges to fix this problem, otherwise from what everyone is saying, I'll just return the darn thing tomorrow.

I had a simialr problem and installed two purchased cartridges and setup the printer. Everything worked great. I then put in the setup cartridges and the printer still works. Currently printing using the setup cartridges and will continue to do so until the ink runs out.
I must admit that HP needs to get their act together on the setup cartridges. It was unacceptable to have to purchase two cartiridges in order to get the printer to work.

I am having the same problem. I have tried following the instructions you have given but nothing works. It will not allow me to update the firmware, I keep getting a fail.
I have been using HP printers for 20 years and this is the first major problem I have had with them. I am sad, but I guess there is nothing I can do now.

I just bought a brand new ENVY photo 7830. Same problem. Used all the "solutions" listed previously, but still not work.
Plan to give up the "provided" black ink cartridge and buy a new one. But worry about I will get the same issue. Keep my finger cross.

Going through your post, I understand that your printer is asking a for setup cartridges even though you are using the setup cartridges. Try to perform a hard reset on the printer and check.
- Remove the cartridges from the printer.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
If the issue persists, you can try performing a reset on the printer. I am sending a private message with instructions. Please check the mailbox icon at the top-right corner of this screen to access your mailbox. i need help to reset printer
