C4795
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I see numerous issues reporting on shadow printing, including the C4795 that I have. All the usual stuff doesn't work, i.e. reset, update drivers, clean the ink, misalignment, etc.

I too get shadow on text, lines, etc., but NOT on scans, NOT on photos, only browsers and other XML based applications.

I have been able to reproduce the issue and can turn the effect on and off (to some limited degree), and it's most easily demonstrated using the latest Excel and Win10. (Never had this issue on Win7 and Excel2007).

The issue seems to be related to "styles". If the cell "style" is not the default, then shadows are created. In Excel, I get shadows to the right. In PDF I get shadows underneath. It happens even if there is a single black cartridge, so it's not alignment. "Styles" (CSS?) are created dynamically.

How to create:

Enter some text in Excel in one cell (default XML style)

Underneath, do the same, but colour the cell (new XML style)

Or create some text and put borders on the cell (new XML style)

Or type in some words in italics (new XML style)

If you print this combination, the default style will print without a shadow, all others will have shadows.

Look forward to this being fixed and an updated driver for Win10.

Hi @Echo_Lake,

Thanks for trying to help out and identify the issue. This has provided some further light on the issue. I will click the answered, not because the issue is resolved, but because your link will just take me back in a circle. This takes me back to where I started, where I talked to an on-line support, who provided no real answers, but who at least suggested that I try this discussion forum. Your link takes me back to the start again, so I'll just be repeating myself. The other option your link provides is to open an HP Open Care package, with no guarantee of a fix. Given the price of the printer, I feel that money would be better spent on a new printer, which is a shame, as this machine has done good service.

Thanks again.

To further prove the point, I reloaded Excel 2007 in parallel with the current version of Excel on the same PC, with the same drivers, same OS (Win10).

  • Printing the cells in current Excel (on Win 10) results in shadows on cells that are not the default style.
  • Printing the same cells, same file, in Excel 2007 (on Win10) does NOT result in shadows

Hi @Echo_Lake,

Thanks for your comments. I feel like I'm going in circles. I contacted support, they told me all the usual things, and suggested that as they couldn't help that I contact this chat board. I  will try again, but I'll be told again that my unit is out of warranty.

Firstly, let's try making a copy and check the printer.

Hi @Echo_Lake,

I tried a colour copy, and I do see faint hints of a shadow. You need a magnifying glass to see it. It's most obvious when there is a mix of colour and black or white surround. Scanning, even at high resolution does not show this.

If you have already performed the steps from the document: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04100778  and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

Hi @Echo_Lake,

Thanks for the pointers. Most of these are related to scanning, but that doesn't seem to be the issue. I found a print utility which prints a reference pattern, and I think it's obvious what is happening when you look at this. It appears as though the black print alignment is raised above the colour print, and some letters and lines are printed grey then overprinted in black which is creating the apparent shadow (See attached).

I did try to align the print heads with the utility, and also by removing the ink units, replacing them and going through the alignment process. It seems that this isn't working.

Is there some way to adjust this via other means? Manually?

(As you can see, scanning is working fine)
