By downloading the User Guide from the HP web site and reading the table of contents... page 88...
HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Check the estimated ink levels
You can check the estimated ink levels from the printer software or from the printer control panel.
To check the estimated ink levels from the printer control panel
▲ From the printer control panel, touch or swipe down the tab at the top of the screen to open the
Dashboard, and then touch (Ink) to check the estimated ink levels.

After much aggrevation finding nothing that worked to check ink levels I want to suggest just getting HP AiO Printer Remote App. It allows one to choose to go WiFi or keep it cable if like me you have it set up with a Cable company through the Ethernet. And as soon as it is 'clicked' on brings up the current ink levels. THEE most common solution offered to check ink levels on Windows 10 Does Not Work, going to Contol Panel right click there AINT no "Service" to click on and pull up ink levels and the forum solution provided here for the posting in caps CHECK INK LEVELS, that seemed to be the bees knees for two happy campers didnt help me a bit as when I went to printer in Control Panel there was NO tab at the top of the screen to open the dashboard to find a link to check ink levels.... Just get the App, and buy the XL in cartridges they more than make up the difference in price and NEVER buy remanufactured ink cartridges they always end up failing, sooner or later.
