My HP 3540 will not accept standard glossy photo printer paper. I bought some lighter paper (170 grams) but that did not work either. Is there a way to adjust the paper thickness level? There is a 115gsm paper advertised on Amazon. Do you think that would work? Thank you.

Welcome to the HP Community --
The following is almost all guess work based on the information I can find for this printer.
I do realize the message lacks cohesiveness --
Disjointed is the price of typing on the fly and not really knowing the product or your software.
Start
The printer appears to be an older model, possibly circa 2015 or similar.
No, you cannot adjust the photo paper thickness setting.
That said, the printer presumably adjusts the paper when you select the paper size followed by the paper type.

No, I don't think super light weight photo paper is the answer.
Why? At a certain point, the paper type (photo) might not be recognized as actual photo paper.
Changing the paper type for your 170 gsm photo paper might work if you can find a suitable alternative in the list.
What? HP Brochure paper (glossy or matte) is typically 180 gsm.
You do have to be able to select the Brochure paper type in the print job settings.
At that point, you might run into a paper size conflict.
True - The specs say you can assign a Custom Size Paper form.
Whether changing the paper type is something that would eventually translate to mixing and matching the paper sizes and compatible types is not something I can answer. I don't have (have never had) a printer of this type and I don't speak Mac printer software. All the examples I have are possibly too far removed to make sense in the context of printer model and the differences in printer sof
According to the Specifications, the printer can (or could, when it was new) support HP and other decent quality photo paper up to 281 gsm.
I found another reference for the Envy 4500 (sister printer) that states photo paper is supported to 250 gsm.
250 gsm is typical, at least for many printers in this general class - go with that, I think.
Why would the printer not support photo paper within the weight class?
Some ideas
Wear and tear -- old printer syndrome - stuff wears out
There is generally no fix for worn out hardware.
Is your printer's hardware worn?
No idea.

If the printer is on the network,
If the Embedded Web Server (EWS) supports the option,
Check / Adjust the Paper Size & Type - Tray and Paper
EWS > HP Document / How-to
Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management
Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)
Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type
Model Dependent: Advanced section
Click Apply to save changes
Tray and Paper – Paper Size / Paper Type / Paper Weight
Reminder
HP Smart Mobile requires that paper size / type is adjusted before the content is opened to be printed.
Paper Size, Type, and Weight loaded in the printer tray must be supported for use in that tray.
EWS provides access and control to check / adjust Tray and Paper Settings.
Note
Depending on the printer model, the Printer Control Panel might (also) provide access to Paper Size / Type settings immediately after the paper is (re)loaded into the appropriate printer intake tray.
What?
Paper Size, Type, and Weight must be appropriate for the tray in which that paper is to be used.
Depending on the printer model, Tray 1 might be used for Custom media.
In this scenario, Tray 2 might only support Plain paper.
OR
If the "Custom Paper Tray" is Tray 2, then Tray 1 might only support Plain paper.
Printers that include a Photo Tray generally place limitations on the size and type of paper that the Photo Tray supports. Example: Depending on the printer model, the Photo Tray might support only 4x6 inch photo paper.
