Is there a way to command my HP 8610 inkjet printer to default to black-ink-only for black-and-white printing and copying? In document "Print" window, there are typically options for "Black and White" and "Color" , and the printer touch-screen offers choices for "Black" or "Color" - however when I choose "black and white" in the window, or "Black" on the touch screen, I can't tell if the printer is using black ink only, or if it's using a blend of inks to produce black text/images. About 90% of everything I print is either text or music notation - in other words, black - and the black ink cartridges hold a much larger volume of ink so it would seem if I could command "use black ink only", I wouldn't have to replace cartridges as often.

Hi,
You may set black ink only as default for printing only, follow the steps below:
1. From the application used to print, click the File menu and select Print.
The Print window appears.
NOTE: The Print window might be minimized: Click the Show Details button to see all available settings.
2. To access the color options, click the lowest selection box listed as the name of the program (e.g. TextEdit)
Will appear as Copies & Pages within Microsoft Office applications.
3. Select Paper Type/Quality from the drop-down menu.
4. Click the triangle next to Color Options to expend the settings.
5. Set the Color field as Grayscale.
6. Set the Grayscale Mode as Black Ink Cartridge Only.
You may save the settings for future use by clicking Presets > Save Current Settings as Preset...
By saving a preset and printing the preset settings will remain default till using another preset..
For copying there is no such way, from teh Copy screen you should press Copy Black to use black ink only.
You may compeltely disable color copying, but that will not allow you to make a color copy unless re-enabling the feature.
If you would like to do so locate the printer's IP address by tapping the WiFi or Ethernet, the IP will be listed.
From any computer open a browser and browse to the printer's IP.
Open the Settings tb and select Administrator Settings.
Within the Color Access Control section disable Color Copy and restart the printer, it will than only offer black copying.
