My OfficeJet Pro 8600, Model SNPRC-1101-01, was used with regular original HP ink cartridges 950/951 and was working. I changed the yellow into Original HP 951XL and the printer showed "wrong or defective...". I did reset the printer and took the cartridges out and replaced them several times. Now the yello XL cartridge is accepted, showing full, the regular black is showing 1/4 full, magenta is showing nothing and cyan now shows "defective". Questions:
Does the yellow 951XL cause this problem?
Can I mix regular and XL cartridges?
Can I trust the error message: Cyan defective?
What do I have to do to get the printer working again?
Please someone let me know what I can do best. Thank you All in advance!

Hello, @TIPS1-2_3 – Hope you are well
Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a fantastic location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others!
I see that you are having issues with the HP Officejet 8600 printer. Do not worry, I’m here to help. Now, to answer your questions:
1) No, HP 951XL cartridge will not cause such issues as many customers are using these cartridges.
2) Yes, you can mix regular and XL cartridges.
3) It could be possible that the cyan cartridge is defective. Or it could be an issue with the print head carriage.
I'd suggest you clean the print head manually. I found a wonderful HP YouTube video with clear instructions to perform this operation. Please check here: http://hp.care/2bVf9iT
The video is made on a different machine, but the steps are the same.
Let me know if that helps!
Cheers 🙂

Thank you very much for this fast response DVortex!
I did the recommended routine prior you told me, when I found this nice YouTube on my own. But thank you anyways!
I explain a bit closer: After I did the power on and total off routine, replacing the cartridges several times and cleaned and adjusted the printhead, sure there was an result! First the printer noticed that all of a sudden a Original HP 951XL (Xtra Large) was added to regular size 951 cartridges. Of course, being told by HP Software to avoid non OEM catridges, the semi-intelligent system just got:"Something wrong...all machines on stop"! That is for the disadvantage of true HP customers!
After the routines and adjustments, the system agreed on the new 951XL cartridge but found the original regular Cyan cartridge to be the bad one..."defective". No, not defective because this Cyan cartridge was printing fine and was just renewed days prior the XL cartridge. But system shows"defective and empty"! Also with Magenta...empty but just renewed. Black just 1/4 left, but just renewed!! Hello??!!
I am a bit upset with this behavior of HP's neurotic Software Manipulation! Now, that we know, that the adjustment of the print-head is not the solution you might like to give me another idea. DVortex, it is not against you! And very good you try to take some negative emotions nicely out of this problem, but the problem is not solved that easy. The software HP was delivering with my printer must be neurotic. Please cure it:)!

Hello, @TIPS1-2_3
Did you update the printer firmware? If not, download and update it here: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One Printer series - N911
Once done restart the printer.
If the issue persists, try to perform a complete factory reset on your printer. I am sending you a private message with the steps. Please check the mailbox icon at the top right corner of your screen to access your inbox.
Let me know how that goes!
Good luck 🙂
