officejet pro 6960

I have seen some posts saying that some HP printers have HP Cartridge Protection which locks any cartridge fitted to that printer making it impossible to use the cartridge(s) in another printer of the same model.

I have also read that this 'feature' can be turned off thereby allowing the swapping of ink cartridges between printers.

So I have the following questions,

Does the officejet pro 6960 have the HP Cartridge Protection?

If it does have HP Cartridge Protection , how do we find the settings and ensure it is off?

Also, with respect to the officejet pro 6960 Printer status report, although some items are self explanatory others are rather vague, where can I find an explanation about the 55 items listed on the report page?

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Forums.

I came across your post and would like to assist.

I understand that you have an HP OfficeJet Pro 6960 All-in-One Printer and would like to know if it has the ink cartridge protection on it. Because you would like to use the ink cartridges into another similar model.

During my research I found that you can disable the setting; this does not "switch off" the protection already assigned to the cartridges that were "protected". Once a cartridge is "protected", that cartridge can only be used in the printer in which the setting was enabled.

Simply said:  There is no fix to "unprotect" a previously protected cartridge

This printer may not have the ink cartridge protection. So you can try to use the ink cartridges into another printer. However, if any error comes up stating that the ink cartridges are protected then we can disable that message.

  • Access the first printer's EWS (Embedded Web Services) page (with the ink cartridges installed in it). Click here to know how to access the EWS page.
  • Tab Settings > category Preferences > HP Cartridge Protection.

Below is an example image on how it may look like:

Image result for HP printers - disabling ink cartridge protection from EWS page

Once the ink cartridge protection is disabled on the printer, remove the ink cartridges out and install in the second printer.

I sincerely hope this information helps. Feel free to keep me posted for any further assistance.

Cheers! 🙂
