Can I use a 61 black ink cartridge and a 61 xl color ink cartridge together?

When I installed the closest color it says cartridge is not compatible

Don't worry, I'm here to help! To better assist you - Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges? 

You can install either the regular inks or the XL inks but not the combination of regular and XL ink.

I installed both XL black and xl color ink cartridges in my house envy 4501. It is saying that the XL Color ink cartridge is not compatible. Is there something else I need to do?

Thanks for getting back to us. I'd be happy to assist. 

Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges? 

Let's try these steps -

1) Take out the cartridges.

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Wait for 30 seconds. 

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not to a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Also, try cleaning the ink cartridges. Please refer to step# 3, 4 and 5 from this document.
