Can a HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw print using just black toner cartridge?

I have just purchased a  HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw and wanted to check that it works properly. Can I print using just black toner cartridge  as I do not want to purchase a whole set until I know the laser jet is functioning properly.

No, all 4 toner cartridges must be in the printer to work.

One last question, do all the cartridges need toner in them for the printer to work, i.e. if I only wanted to use a new HP black toner cartridge to check if the printer functions normally, would that work?

If you have only a black toner cartridge installed the printer will ask to install 3 color cartridges. 

If any cartridge is empty or missing the printer stops.
