We have a LaserJet 200 color M251nw without toner cartridges. Currently it gives the warning "Internal Processing Error. If the problem persists, check for firmware updates".

Actually Scan was working without toner cartridges, but I executed SmartInstall just to install the latest software. It then created several entries in the list of Printers & Scanners such as HP Laser Jet 200 M251 PCL6 ( copy 1), (cop[y 2), etc. One HP page states that SmartInstall is no longer maintained. I then deleted the entries that I thought was redundant from the Printers & Scanners list and from Registry of Windows. Then the remaining HP LaserJet 200 M251 PCL6 was not recognized. Therefore I downloaded and installed Drivers & Software and Firmware. However, "Internal Processing Error" still occurred.

So I did Factory Reset the printer and made Wi-Fi work. Then I can access the Embedded Web Server by using 10.0.0.173. However, when I press the Apps on the Home of the printer console, "Enable Web Service" is displayed. To enable the Web Service, the Terms of Service must be printed. If I skip this step, "Internal Processing Error" occurs.

What I want to ask is the following. Does missing toner cartridges cause "Internal Processing Error"?  Scan was once working with missing toner cartridges. Why did it stop working even when the latest drivers, software, and firmware were installed? Why do we have to enable Web Service when the Embedded Web Server is working"?

@Tonchan, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

Web services are different from the EWS page of the printer. Both are not related.

Turning on Web Services allows your printer to communicate securely over the internet with web-connected printing services, such as HP ePrint cloud printing and HP Instant Ink delivery services.

Refer to this document to know how to turn it on.

You may install empty ink toners and then try to scan. Toners have to be installed in the printer to use it.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

I made a mistake LaserJet 200 color M251nw does not support scanning. As we have three HP printers, I was confused.

However, I still do not understand  why missing toner cartridges causes "Internal Processing Error".

Another problem is that I executed SmartInstall that was included in the package of HP Software although it is no longer supported. Even if we delete a printer from Windows Settings page, the name registered in the Windows Registry is not deleted. Therefore the name of a printer that is deleted from the Windows Settings page cannot be reused unless it is removed also from the Registry and restart Print Spooler service.

Yes, an HP LaserJet Pro 200 Color M251nw printer does not have a copy/scan feature according to the printer specifications.

Perform a root uninstallation of printer driver to remove the entry from the registry:

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP OfficeJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

If you still get the Internal processing error, we can perform an NVRAM reset and check if that helps.

  • The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
