Hi
I am trying to install a D1660 printer via USB to a PC running Windows 10, without success.
In control panel\devices and pritners, the printer shows up as an 'unknown device' .
I have tried following the HP links for installing via USB, which took me to HP Easy Start.
Using Easy Start, I get to the point at which it is 'searching for available software for this product', however, the application fails every time, showing an 'Internet Connection Error' message.
I'm now not sure how to progress this installation.

Give the Windows 8.1 driver a try.

Hi Dean
Thanks - this may have done the trick (I'm about 95% there), as I was able to install the 8.1 software and re-started the PC.
While this did add the correct device in the right place, I still couldn't get the printer working (connection issue) and the Win 10 trouble-shooter couldn't fix it.
I then downloaded the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which fouind the device, loaded the Windows update driver.
The printer still failed to communicate properly and Print and Scan Dr could troubleshoot correctly but, this time, the Win 10 troubleshooter identified the (communication) fault and fixed it, followed by a restart.
I can now communicate with the printer - the print quality is appaling, but I have no idea how long it has been since it was last used - at least running the head cleaning function several times has helped, so will continue on with that until I can get new print cartridges for it.

Hi Marc, instead of spending money on new cartridges may I suggest that you consider a new printer.
