Installing ink cartridges on this at least ten year old printer has always been a piece of cake. This time I had to TUG to remove the old black cartridge and the new one will not go in no matter how I try. Am I sentenced to a new printer?

Welcome to the HP Forums, I understand that you are unable to install the cartridges.

I would like to help you.

However, I will need a few details to provide an accurate solution,

  • Are you using genuine HP ink cartridge?
  • Did you check if the ink cartridges are compatible?

Meanwhile, make sure you are using HP 74 black and 75 tri-color cartridges.

I hope it helps.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others and please give the same post a Kudos.

I am using a 74 black cartridge purchased from hp. As I said in my original post, I've never had this problem before. I said I thought I'd had the printer for at least ten years, but that was a slight exaggeration. I ordered it 5/29/2009.

Tried one more time and it worked! I can't believe it.  But I'm happy.
