My printer gives the following error message: can't print because of problem with installed cartridges or payment method of your account. The cartridges are official HP cartridges and the printer has functioned well during a certain time
It says that the cartridges of the instant ink subscription only function with an active subscription. Does this mean that I have no choice but subscribe to the instant ink system? Thanks for your help.

Hi @Isabellef
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you're encountering an issue where your HP printer is not printing because it is tied to an HP Instant Ink subscription. The error message you’re seeing indicates that the Instant Ink cartridges can only work if the subscription is active, which is why you might be unable to print if the account is inactive or there’s a payment issue.
Here are the steps you can take to resolve this issue:
1. Check the Status of Your Instant Ink Subscription
- Log into your HP Instant Ink account (https://www.hpinstantink.com).
- Check if your subscription is active. If it’s expired or suspended due to a payment issue, you may need to either update your payment method or reactivate the subscription.
To fix payment issues:
- Ensure your credit card or payment method is up-to-date.
- If there’s an issue with the payment method, update it in your Instant Ink account.
2. Verify the Cartridge Status
- Check the cartridges to make sure they are official HP Instant Ink cartridges and have not been tampered with.
- Sometimes, if there’s a mix-up between regular HP cartridges and Instant Ink cartridges, the printer might flag an error. If you accidentally installed a regular cartridge while expecting Instant Ink, it might cause the error.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
