HP Envy 5030

Hey!

I'm looking at buying an HP Envy 5030 printer but would like to know if it is capable of printing on custom paper sizes.  I need to print on a pretty obnoxiously sized 22.5 cm x 18.3 cm sheet.  Would this be possible?

I would be printing from Windows 10 or Android on the off chance that affects the answer.

Cheers

Apologies for jumping in unannounced.

This is a relatively new printer series -- the software is new and there is a new firmware update available.

Newer printer (post 2013) and new software is an indication that the Custom Paper Sizes form setup is available in Windows.

Just as a Heads-up -- this printer does not have an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).  As long as you do not use -- and do not expect -- the feature, the information about ADF is not relevant / important

From How-to > Print > Instructions and Settings

Creating Custom Paper Sizes

The "custom size" paper must meet the following requirements:

  • The size of the new (custom sized form) must fall within the minimum and maximum sizes allowed in the printer

Example - Specifications for Product Number M2U92B

Media sizes, custom (metric)
Simplex: 76.2 x 127 mm to 216 x 594 mm; Duplex: 76.2 x 127 mm to 216 x 594 mm
Media sizes, custom (U.S. standard)
Simplex: 3 x 5 to 8.5 x 14; Duplex: 3 x 5.5 to 8.5 x 12.2 in

  • The Media type (kind of paper) must be supported

  • The Settings must be selected (in the software used to submit the job to the printer) in an allowed combination (Media type, Source (Tray), Paper Size).  For example:  Photo paper is not compatible with Duplex regardless of the size of the paper.

I cannot answer the questions regarding printing from Android.  In particular, the "custom form" setting must be available / selectable in the Android Application.  ??

Recommendation

Before you purchase any printer, please read the Specifications, the User Guide, the Datasheet (look for this on the 'net), and a selection of documents from From How-to > Print > Instructions and Settings

I would check on the printers specifications before hand.If this is not listed then the machine is not capable of that.Hope this will help.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

I've checked the specification, can't see any mention of it.  Going through the user guide indicates that the paper size can be changed but it only mentions doing so via a drop down menu, so presumably custom sizes are not an option.

If anyone has any experience that would confirm (or even better contradict) the above, that would be great 🙂

Commentary

Know that the "more expensive" printers are going to provide more "up front" features, likely provide longer service, and likely hold up better for everyday printing tasks.

One of the details to look for in a printer:  duty pages, that is, the expected monthly use.

This kind of information is usually provided in the Datasheet.

For example:

Monthly duty cycle
Up to 1,000 pages (A4); Recommended monthly page volume: 100 to 400 pages

Hate worrying about the printer?  READ the Care Pack information regarding "extra" warranty coverage.  Typical hardware warranty included with a consumer grade printer (or computer) is one year of hardware-only coverage.  Consider the costs and benefits carefully and then decide which option(s) are right for your situation.

  • I am NOT trying to talk you into purchasing a more expensive printer (of any brand).
  • I am NOT trying to "sell you" a Care Pack Warranty -- this is a voluntary purchase and should only be considered after reading about the costs / benefits / restrictions.
  • I am urging you to be truly informed about your purchase to reduce regrets..."Gee, if only"

Happy Printing!
