Scan via USB to the local computer, but still maintain an active wireless connection so that wireless computers can print to it. Can the local PC print via the LAN (ie. it is not wireless, but is connected to the LAN).

You may have USB and wireless OR USB and wired LAN.  You may not have wireless and wired LAN at the same time.   If the LAN cable is plugged in the wireless in the printer is automatically disabled because you can not have 2 IP address to the same device.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

Spoiler

No, it can either be only Wireless or LAN.

However, you have a made good use of the printer - USB and Wireless.

Some homes used the USB to print while at their desk and the wireless to print when they are about the house (e.g. in the living room etc)

Only need to take note to select the correct (USB or Wireless) drivers during printing.

Hope that helps!

I would like to have the printer wired to the computer all of the time (USB) and still be able to print via wireless when ever I need to.

I don't want to take a chance of really messing up my computer/printer hookup by messing around with trying many differing settings.
