Printer will not print. When starting a print job, printer status switches from "Idle, Default" to off line. When print job is cancelled, the printer reverts to "Idle, default" Printer status remains "Ready" on HP Smart. Printer and computer are connected to the same network. Running OS SONOMA 14.5 on MACBOOK Pro 2019. Files seem to print fine from mobile devices. Never experienced this problem before.

Hi @MarkWyo,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
It seems like your HP DeskJet 4158e printer is having trouble communicating with your MacBook Pro (running macOS Sonoma 14.5), though it works fine from mobile devices. Here are a few steps to help resolve the issue:
1. Remove and Re-add the Printer on macOS
- Sometimes the printer connection may become corrupted or misconfigured. Removing and re-adding the printer can reset the connection.
- Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP DeskJet 4158e, and click the “-” button to remove it.
- Restart your Mac, then go back to Printers & Scanners and click the "+" button to re-add the printer.
- Ensure that you select the AirPrint option (if available) when re-adding the printer.
2. Reset the Print System
- This step can resolve most issues by resetting all print settings on your Mac.
- Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and select Reset printing system.
- After resetting, re-add your HP DeskJet 4158e as described above.
3. Check for Driver Updates
- Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers compatible with macOS Sonoma 14.5.
- Download the latest HP Easy Start software from the HP support website and install it. The tool will guide you through updating the drivers and reconnecting the printer.
4. Verify Printer is Set as Default
- Ensure the printer is set as the default on your Mac.
- Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- Select the HP DeskJet 4158e and make sure it is listed as the default printer.
5. Check for Network Issues
- Since it works fine from mobile devices, the issue might be isolated to your Mac’s connection to the printer.
- Ensure both the MacBook and the printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (double-check the network names).
- Restart your router, printer, and MacBook to refresh the network settings.
- Try printing with a USB connection to see if the issue is Wi-Fi-related.
If the printer still shows as offline after following these steps, try printing directly from the HP Smart app on your Mac to see if that works.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
