My 477dw (just installed this morning) is running firmware version MAVEDWPP1N001.1548D.00, built 2015-12-07. The model number is D3Q20A.
I tried to upgrade it to the most recent firmware version (1708D, built 10 Mar 2017), mostly to fix some of the recent security issues, with no luck:
- using the installer downloaded from HP support (PW477_DW_R1708D.exe): it locates my printer correctly, but does not allow me to select it for applying the upgrade (cannot click in checkbox on the printer line)
- using the EWS, (Check Now button on the firmware page), it tells me there is no firmware update available
Am I missing an obvious step somewhere?
One strange thing is that D3Q20A is not listed as one of the product numbers supported by this firmware update, even though the update is on the support page for the 477dw. Looking at the accompanying PDF, it lists 10 product names and 10 product models, but they do not match: the 577z model is mentionned (K9Z76A), but the product name is missing, while the 477dw product name is mentionned, but its product model (D3Q20A) is missing. Quite suspicious... The 577z software page does not contain any firmware update. The other products in the list point to the same firmware updater. So it really looks like this firmware update is incorrectly tagged (577z instead of 477dw), making it impossible to install it on the 477dw.
Suggestions welcome...

Somehow, the problem solved itself. The firmware update showed up on the printer this morning (I have it set up to let me know, but don't install automatically) and I could install it from EWS without any problem. The printer is now running 1708D, which is the most recent update.
No idea why there was a (repeatable) hiccup yesterday. Either I caught the release process before it was entirely installed on the HP side (the update dates from about 2 weeks ago), or HP fixed something in the update database. Case closed anyway...

Hi Tiberius,
I would try this link:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laserjet-pro-mfp-m477-series/7326560
Download the firmware on this page. It doesn't have the version you have mentioned but it does have version 20160921 (Oct 20, 2016) which is the latest HP approved version.
Once downloaded, run the utility and see how it goes.

The update you point to is for the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477 series printers, not for the HP PageWide Pro 477dw Multifunction Printer. [side note: using the same product short name, 477, for 2 very different things is a source of easy confusion!]
I noticed that after trying it out. Spewed out a few thousand pages of random garbage, so don't do this at home unless you're around to recycle the paper back to the paper loading tray... But no harm done.
