pavilion 27-A230
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I can print to my canon TS6300 via my mobile phone and other mobile devices but can't print or scan from my Pavilion.  It was working ok until I updated Windows 10 last.  I have spent hours online with both canon and my ISP, ATT Uverse.  Each blames the other but no one has the answer.  Could it be my firewall, Norton360?  Even when it is turned off?  I am spending much too much time trying to fix this.  Part two:  Even when plugged in directly, I can't get the printer to scan.  I have unplugged, restarted, discombobulated, refluxed, and performed every other verb I can think of to the system without positive results.  I need help.  Please don't tell me to unplug, restart, wait 30 seconds, check my drivers,. . .  I really need serious help. Thanks, P.S.  I had the same problem once before with my HP printer.  They even sent me a new printer.  That didn't work either.

Keep in mind...

Any advice you receive that you do not want to follow is up to you - we are not the printer police.

The amount of time you spend is also not something we will force - some issues are frustrating.

Not everything in the following list is fully explained - this is your system and you likely know it pretty well by now.

It is understood, too, that you have likely completed most / all of the suggestions.  Ignore what you have tried.

At the least, the completed list will have eliminated a number of possible "trouble spots"...

Starting "here we are"

If the HP printers did not work,

If the Canon printer does not work,

  • Completely Uninstall the printer software, checking for lurking instances of that software / connection >> Replacing the drivers, restarting the various printers does not work,
  • Change the connection type to TCP/IP (this is magic and should be on your list)

Method - Create TCP IP port

** Install – Optional - Port Issues - Create a TCP/IP port **

TCP/IP can resolve odd connection, scanning, and installation problems.

Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by  greenturtle:

  1. 1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
    2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, Right-Click the printer and Left-Click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
    3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
    4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:
Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port within the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

  • Windows 10 is updated, not showing errors,
  • The computer is not showing Blue screen at boot (indicating errors),
  • The computer is running the latest available HP Drivers, including the latest BIOS update for its model and board,
  • The printer is plugged into a decent, single wall outlet (and not a surge protector),
  • "Fast Boot" is switched off,
  • You have tried a cold boot / forced boot,

“Press and Pray”

Forced Restart / Boot

  1. Unplug everything, including power and all other externally connected components
  2. Press and hold down the power button for thirty (30) to forty (40) seconds
  3. Release the power button
  4. Plug in only basic components needed to start / boot the computer

>> Desktop:  Connect Power, wired mouse and keyboard, HDMI to monitor (and monitor is powered on).  Make sure Power is properly connected and all the way plugged in on both wall and machine.

>> Notebook:  Connect AC Power.  Make sure Power properly connected and is all the way plugged in on both wall and machine.

  1. Switch on the system with power button - Click power and release (as for normal boot)

Hoped for Results:

System switches on, monitor active, mouse and keyboard responsive

The problem might be in your Security software.

  • But - no, you switched off your Security software...

"Could it be my firewall, Norton360? Even when it is turned off?"

  • Yes, normally your Canon support, Norton, or ATT would have mentioned the security block - it is a common issue when trying to connect devices to the computer that runs the security software.
  • Assuming that you have already checked your Security software and, if needed, set an "allow" flag for the software that is not installing, not working, not allowed to run - then another place to look is in your network.

Network

  • If you have not done so, log into your router and check the logs.
  • If the router is aware of any connection issues, it will perhaps have logged the incidents.
  • If the router is old, outdated, weak, or otherwise unsuited to provide the service required of it, it should be replaced.  This is a common "break point" and one that people sometimes resist.  Not the problem, ignore and move on...
  • If you are running a dual frequency network, if the router supports doing to, make sure each band is broadcasting and that you have assigned a separate SSID network name for each band / frequency.
  • Check the router connection setup / logs for unmatched IP / Mac address pairs - this is NOT generally a problem but can certainly be something that you should check after having used more than just the one printer in the network.
  • While testing, switch off OTHER devices that normally connect to your network.
  • Mentioned only because someone else is always reading these posts:  Reset the router at some point.  Yes, this means you must re-enter all the device data into the router.  It is painful but not likely the only time you will ever do this.

What else?

If you have not done so, if you are willing to do so, run the hardware component tests on the computer.

Testing for Hardware Failures

What else?

Try creating a new account and use that.

Why?  Because there are two PrinterControl folder hierarchies in your computer.

One of these is in your user account.

What else?

Consider reloading Windows.

Everyone hates this one.

It generally works to resolve anything that does not respond to "everything" else.

Why even consider it?

HP printer did not work.

Second HP printer did not work.

Canon printer does not work.

After you have completed all the tests, checks in the network, in the router, in your software,

Consider the source of the problem is deep in the Windows OS.

There are libraries and files in Windows that might be corrupted beyond repair.

What else?

If you wish to do so, try fussing with the Registry - I won't tell you how to do that.

You can do wonderful, marvelous things in the Registry - and you can break Windows.

That's a lot.
