Hi @Gaz46 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with cartridge errors on an HP Officejet J3680 All-In-One Printer, even after trying the usual fixes and using new genuine HP cartridges, it can be quite frustrating. Here are some additional steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Additional Steps to Troubleshoot Cartridge Error

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the printer cover to access the cartridges.
  • Remove the cartridges carefully.
  • Using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water, gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.

Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and then to the back of the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on.

Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Go to the HP Support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your model. Download and install any updates following the provided instructions.

Align the Cartridges:

  • Sometimes, misalignment can cause cartridge errors. Use the printer's control panel to navigate to the maintenance settings and select the option to align the cartridges.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Inspect the inside of the printer for any paper debris, dust, or foreign objects that might be interfering with the cartridge sensors.

Reset the Printer Settings:

  • Resetting the printer settings to factory defaults can sometimes resolve issues. Refer to the user manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset on your specific model.

Use HP Diagnostic Tools:

  • HP provides diagnostic tools that can help identify and resolve issues. Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to troubleshoot the problem.

Check Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure the cartridges are compatible with your printer model. Sometimes, even genuine HP cartridges can be incompatible if they are not the correct type for your specific printer model.

Refer to this document:  HP printer ink cartridge issues including 'Incompatible', 'Missing', 'Failure' and enrollment errors

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
