HP Deskjet 1010 Printer

My printer ceased to print and shows up a cartridge error eg not compatible. However, because the cartridges are so expensive I am reluctant to buy one in case its the printer at fault. Is there any way I could test the printer without the cartridge? It a pity HP don't provide test cartridges for such issues.

Hi @GeorgeGS1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering a cartridge error on your HP LaserJet 1010 printer, there are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check Cartridge Installation: Make sure the toner cartridge is properly installed. Open the printer's front cover, remove the cartridge, and then reinsert it securely into the printer.
  • Clean Contacts: Dust or dirt on the cartridge contacts or printer contacts can cause communication issues. Gently wipe the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  • Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can help reset the printer and clear any temporary errors.
  • Check for Protective Seal: Ensure that you have removed any protective seals or tapes from the new toner cartridge before installation. These seals can interfere with the printer's recognition of the cartridge.
  • Try a Different Cartridge: If you have another compatible cartridge available, try using it to see if the error persists. This can help determine if the issue is with the cartridge itself or the printer.
  • Update Firmware: If there's a firmware update available for your printer, consider updating it. Sometimes, firmware updates can address compatibility issues and improve overall performance.
  • Inspect for Damage: Check the cartridge for any visible damage. If the cartridge is visibly damaged, you may need to replace it.
  • Clean Paper Path: Sometimes debris or paper dust can accumulate in the printer's paper path, which might lead to cartridge errors. Carefully clean the inside of the printer using a soft brush or compressed air.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your response. Sorry I failed to mention it is a Deskjet printer. I have tried all the methods you suggest but it remains the same. Its a shame really because I have another printer an HP Deskjet 3845 which prints well but will not

pick up normal paper. I have to resort to very thin paper normally used for dotmatrix printers.   Thanks again.
