I was trying to print some 4x6 photos and in the process I somehow changed  the  paper size from letter to 4x6.  Now, whatever my wife, using an I Pad, sends to the printer comes out reduced to 4x6.  Or if we attempt to copy a doc off the glass an error message appears: "The paper size detected by the printer does not match the paper size selected for the job." I can print a doc from the desktop OK with not problems.   I guess my question is- how do I change the paper size on the printer?.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the HP Community.

In the case of Windows - even using the HP Smart application - you have some leeway about when and where you change the paper size / type.

For example,

  • Change the Paper Size & Type in Printing Preferences
  • Change / Update the Paper Size & Type on the printer control screen or in the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

When you are using a Mobile device (for example, the iPad), the Paper Size & Type must be selected before the item to be printed is opened in the application.

EWS - HP Smart for Mobile - iOS / iPadOS

Reminder: The EWS Tray and Paper settings must be updated before you open the object to be printed.

Open HP Smart (for mobile)

Open Settings wheel

Open Add / Set Up a Printer

Scroll down, Click, Tray and Paper

Model Dependent:  Check / Adjust settings in Advanced

Click Apply to save changes

Example - HP Smart - Mobile - iPadOS - Home Page / Main Menu

Example - Retain / Modify (Edit) / Check Paper Size & Type - Tray and Paper Management

The suggestion: Change / Update the Paper Size & Type on the printer control screen- did the trick.!  I swear I've been to that menu more than one time but at least this one worked just fine.  Thank you so much Dragon-Fur!

You are welcome.

True - sometimes you have to open the tray - stare at it for a second - close the tray

Wait for stubborn printer to realize it needs to let you check / edit the paper size & type.

Happy Printing.
