I have an HP office jet pro 6978. I had a paper jam and had to open up the top of the printer to get it out.  Once I closed it back up, I am now getting a message that says “close tray” or “paper try open” — although the paper tray is closed.
I have removed the tray several times, turned the printer off and on… I have no idea what to do!

Hi @SML818,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

As I Understand there's an error message-"Close tray" though the tray is closed,

No worries as I'd love to help, however, I need a few more details to provide an accurate solution:

Did you check for any obstructions that may prevent the tray from closing, to be on a safer side?

Have you attempted to restart the printer and try again?

While you reply, here are a few things you can do:

Solution one: Make sure that the input tray is completely closed

Make sure that you have properly closed the main input tray by pushing the tray into the printer as far as possible.

Solution two: Reload the paper in the input tray

Paper that is loaded incorrectly in the input tray might prevent the tray from closing completely. Remove any paper from the input tray, and then reload the paper correctly before closing the input tray.

Solution three: Check for obstructions that prevent the input tray from closing

Remove any paper or other obstructions from underneath the printer and inside the gap where the input tray slides into.

Solution four: Restart the printer

Turning the printer off and then on again can reset the printer and clear the message from the control panel.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
