Today printer will only print colour & grey ....
I tried test prints, clean print head,,,,,, still the same
Tried a new HP Black cartridge - still the same.
REbooted printer & PC ...... still the same
Ran HP Print & Scan Doctor .....it detects Printer correctly as C410 .. select 'fix printing' it gives 'green' for
"Recommended Updates"
"print Spooler"
and "Driver Check"
but then stops on "Device Status" and gives text about using genuine HP cartridges (which they are) and read the on-screen error message.
There is no on-screen error message.
Welcome suggestions please.

Just an update ..... if I do a new document and large font (48 etc) and just print one word ..... it does print as very light grey.
Certainly no Black .... and it's not the cartridge as the same on a brand new cartridge.
All colours seem to be printing fine.
KEY (I think) having run 'Clean Print Heads' and then run s 'Print Quality Report' this still had no black, so this is nothing to do with PC (or the response from poster on Print Spooler). It must be issue with Printer itself.

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve black not printing on your Photosmart c410b. Go through the steps in Solution 6. If this does not resolve the issue I would suggest soaking the printhead as described in the post here (rather than the troubleshooting suggestion of replacing the printhead).

I can understand if you are reluctant to soak the printhead as this seems like an extreme solution. I can assure you that it is safe, it has helped many and the procedure has been incorporated in the troubleshooting documentation for a number of HP printers that use this cartridge style. For example, see Step 7 in the document here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-photosmart-premium-fax-all-in-one-printer-series-c309/373719...
