HP Envy 6200 series

My printer was working fine on Monday.  Yesterday it started giving me an error message saying it could not communicate with the color cartridge, which has been in there for months.  It printed with the color cartridge on Monday, so it is not a lack of ink issue.  I have restarted the printer, unplugged and replugged the printer, changed to a different cartridge, cleaned the contacts of both the cartridges, cleaned the contacts inside the printer and still get the same error message.

@AngelaM1920, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding communication error messages!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Since you’ve already tried several troubleshooting steps (resetting, cleaning contacts, replacing the cartridge), let’s go through a few more things to try.

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cable from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes to clear any stored errors.
  4. Plug the power cable back in and turn the printer on.

If the error persists, move to the next step.

Reseat the Ink Cartridges

Since the printer is having trouble communicating with the color cartridge, try reseating both cartridges:

  1. Open the cartridge access door and wait until the carriage stops moving.
  2. Remove both the black and color cartridges.
  3. Reinsert the black cartridge first, then the color cartridge.
  4. Close the door and check if the error is gone.

Update Printer Firmware

An outdated printer firmware may cause cartridge recognition issues.

  1. On your computer, go to HP Support: HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  2. Enter your printer model (HP Envy 6200 series).
  3. Download and install any available firmware updates.
  4. Restart the printer and check if the issue is resolved.
