I wouldn't call it resolved since it still doesn't work via USB but at last I found a workaround and moved the printer to my router and use network printing instead. Finally it works and now it's wireless too. 🙂
Once again, thank you for your kind attempts to help me and have a great day.

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.
As I understand the communication error,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Have you attempted to remove the current drivers and install new drivers instead?
While you respond to that, here's what I recommend you do:
Install the best available HP print driver and software on your Mac using Apple Software Update. Before installing the software, turn on the printer and make sure it is connected to the computer you want to print or scan from, either with a USB cable or through your local Wi-Fi or wired network.
NOTE:
Since October 2016, HP printer software packages are no longer delivered through Apple Software Update. Visit 123.hp.com to download the latest HP software for your printer. Alternatively, if your printer supports Apple AirPrint, you do not need a driver to print from your Mac or iOS device. For more information, go to About AirPrint (in English).

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)
Keep me posted,
If the information I've provided was helpful,
give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Hello and many thanks for the quick reply.
I did not specify this in my last post but this concerns a late 2009 MacBook with Mac OS X High Sierra. Before I re-installed it was on OSX Mavericks but the problem was the same. Printer driver is 4.0.5 and seems to be the latest available. This 123.hp thing doesn't list the C5180.
This is what I have tried:
1) Removed the printer from the list and re-added.
2) Reset the print system.
3) Removed all drivers from library/printers/ and re-installed drivers.
4) Format disk and made a clean install of OSX High Sierra from scratch.
Since it works well with my newer MacBook Air 2014 I'm beginning to think that there's a hardware USB-problem on my mac. Strange thing is that USB-harddrives works just fine and I could make a 30GB backup without a hickup.

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉
I appreciate your time and efforts,
That said, You and me both! I believe there's an issue with the USB port that needs to be addressed,
Please check if other devices work using the same ports that are being used by the printer to check it's functionality.
Or better yet, Contact their support team and get this taken care off.

Now I have tried two USB-HDD's, two other printers, different USB cables and my iPhone and all works well. Very strange indeed. I really appreciate your efforts but I can't see how this could be a solution
Have a great day you too.
